Universiti Malaya is proud to announce that Associate Prof. Dr. Rozalina Zakaria from the Photonics Research Centre has received an Honorary Mention as Malaysia’s Regional Finalist at the U.S.-ASEAN Science Prize for Women 2025, held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The U.S.-ASEAN Science Prize for Women is supported by the U.S. Government, ASEAN, and USAID, and highlights scientific contributions that drive sustainability, innovation, and positive societal impact across the region
The annual award celebrates outstanding women scientists across Southeast Asia whose work strengthens regional sustainability and inspires future generations in science and technology. This year’s theme, “Generative AI for Water Management,” focuses on how artificial intelligence can help countries better protect and manage their water resources.
Dr. Rozalina was recognised for her innovative research titled “Generative AI Using Plasmonic Optical Fiber Sensor for Heavy Metal Ion Detection in Water Quality Monitoring Systems.” In simple terms, her work combines advanced light-based sensors with AI to detect harmful metals in water more accurately and in real time. This breakthrough could help communities monitor water safety faster and more efficiently, contributing to healthier and more sustainable water management practices. Universiti Malaya congratulates Associate Prof. Dr. Rozalina Zakaria on this remarkable achievement. Her dedication and pioneering spirit reflect the strength and potential of women in STEM, and her work continues to pave the way toward a safer and more sustainable future.
