Innovation & Research Commercialization Management Department

The Innovation & Research Commercialization Management Department (JPIPP), under the Portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), is the driving force behind Universiti Malaya’s innovation, industry engagement, and commercialization ecosystem. JPIPP strengthens UM’s position as a research-intensive institution by bridging academia with industry, safeguarding intellectual property, and transforming research into impactful real-world solutions.

Supported by three (3) key Responsibility Centres—UM Centre of Industry Relations (UMCIR), UM Centre of Innovation & Enterprise (UMCIE), and the Technology Innovation Centre (Makerspace@UM). JPIPP delivers an integrated approach to innovation, partnerships, and technology development.

Industry Engagement & Strategic Partnerships

  • Builds and manages collaborations with industry partners, government agencies, and international institutions.
  • Facilitates internship placements, industrial training, and experiential learning programmes.
  • Strengthens UM–industry networks to support research translation, consultancy, and talent development.

 

Innovation, Enterprise & Commercialization Management

  • Oversees the full innovation value chain—from idea validation to technology licensing and spin-off creation.
  • Manages intellectual property (IP) protection, advisory, and strategic IP portfolio development.
  • Facilitates commercialization pathways through licensing agreements, startup mentoring, and enterprise partnerships.

 

Prototyping, Product Development & Technological Enablement

  • Provides advanced facilities for design, prototyping, and proof-of-concept development.
  • Supports researchers, students, and startups in transforming ideas into tangible prototypes and market-ready solutions.
  • Enhances innovation culture through workshops, technical training, makers programmes, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

 

Research Translation & Ecosystem Development

  • Aligns research outputs with market and societal needs to enhance UM’s impact locally and globally.
  • Builds an innovation-driven environment through strategic policies, capacity-building initiatives, and commercial readiness programmes.
  • Promotes UM’s achievements to industry and stakeholders through innovation showcases and strategic outreach.

UM Centre of Industry Relations (UMCIR) 

Strengthens UM–industry linkages through structured collaborations, joint programmes, and experiential learning initiatives.

UM Centre of Innovation & Enterprise (UMCIE)

Leads innovation management, commercialisation, IP protection, enterprise development, and technology transfer.

Technology Innovation Centre (Makerspace@UM)

A hands-on, technology-enabled hub for prototyping, product development, design innovation, and technical upskilling.
