The eligibility requirements for Research Assistants are to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors or an equivalent qualification.

Basic Degree students currently studying at the University of Malaya are NOT eligible to be appointed to this position.

All Research Assistant (RA) appointments are of contract status.

The minimum appointment period for Malaysian citizens should be at least four (4) months while non-citizens should be at least six (6) months.

Application for contract extension should be started at least TWO (2) months before the contract expiry date through the application system. This is to avoid delays in salary payments.

Yes, appointed Research Assistants (RA) are required to contribute to EPF and SOCSO. However, for the appointment of an international Research Assistant (RA), EPF and SOCSO contributions are not required.

Yes, the appointed Research Assistant (RA) must record attendance at the workplace according to the time set by the Chief Researcher through the use of the attendance system (e-attendance) that is used.

Application for extension can be made within TWO (2) months before the end date of the contract by the Chief Researcher through the UMPortal online system, Research Assistant Recruitment System (RARS).

The minimum extension period for Malaysian citizens should be at least four (4) months while non-citizens should be at least six (6) months.

The maximum extension period for Malaysian and non-citizen candidates is not more than 12 months at a time.

Candidates holding or receiving financial assistance from any promoter CANNOT be appointed as Research Assistant (RA).

FAQ GRA

The qualification requirements for Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) must be from among registered students who are currently pursuing Master’s or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies at the University of Malaya.

Basic Degree students currently studying at the University of Malaya are not allowed to be appointed to this position. If there is a need to appoint a candidate, the supervisor needs to deal with the Counseling & Guidance Section, Student & Alumni Affairs Division under the Student Skills Development Program (PPKS) scheme.

All appointed Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) appointments are of contract status.

The minimum appointment period for Malaysian citizens and non-citizens is at least four (4) months

The maximum appointment period for Malaysian citizens and non-citizens is until the end date of the grant/project

The working time that has been set for the Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) is flexible (five) 5 days a week including Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays with a working time of at least 8 hours a day. Cumulative working hours are at least 40 hours per week.

The appointed Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) DOES NOT NEED to contribute to EPF and SOSCO

The maximum extension period for Malaysian and non-Malaysian candidates is until the grant/project end date.

The “UM Scholarship Scheme (UMSS)” agreement only needs to be submitted once and applies throughout the course of study. Candidates who have submitted the agreement do not need to submit it again on the next application for the appointment of a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA).

The tuition fee exemption process ends 3 months before the end of the current semester.

The admission fee must be paid by the prospective student and it is not included in the Tuition Fee Waiver. RE status (Ready to Enrol) will only be given after the admission fee has been cleared by the prospective student.
